Faulty Whirlpool Icemaker

Problem: Refrigerator is displaying an E2 error code on test 56. Ice maker has been replaced, the temperature is ok & test 45 fills the ice maker. The ice maker will initially make ice but will not call for water after completing test 45.


Diagnosis: The ice maker in this unit is a 'dummy' ice maker meaning it takes power and operational commands from the control board. In this case, what seems to be a faulty ice maker may actually be caused by a faulty main control board. Before replacing the board, do the following:


1) Ensure the icebox fan is running properly and that the temperature is below the cut-off of 16 degrees F ( -9 degrees C ).


2) Check the emitter/receiver system to make sure the unit does not think the ice bin is full.


3) Make sure the door light/interconnect switch is operating properly.


If none of these checks solves the problem, the main control board may be faulty.
